Semarang has a mesmerizing old world charm towered with Dutch colonial architecture fused with contrasting modern mid-rises. Far away from the hustle and bustle of tourist destinations, Semarang presents itself as a place where you can enjoy the serenity along with the composite mix of Javanese, Chinese, Indian and Arabian cultures. The simplicity of Semarang is bound to strike an invisible chord with the traveler who has the passion to discover the natural ambiance of life as it is.

A trip to the Candi Hill gives a breathtaking view of the mystic plateau's port, the scenic lowlands and the green paddy fields. One of the major attractions in the city is the beautiful Sam Po Kong temple built in honor of the Chinese commander, Cheng Ho of the Ming Dynasty who visited Semarang in the early 15th century. Kawah Putih (White Crater) at The Flowers City, Bandung

Kawah Putih ('White Crater') is an extinct volcanic crater located south-west of Bandung. The drive from Bandung city will take about 2 hours. There will be pickup vans at the base of Kawah Putih to take you up to the actual crater itself. Driving up with your own private vehicle is possible, but very expensive. These pickups only cost 15,000RP and use open-sided 'safari-style' pickup vans, which makes the ride up very interesting.

The view of Kawah Putih itself is stunning and at times, surreal. Occasionally, the clouds will intermix with the sulphuric gases from the crater, forming this entirely white backdrop. A stunning location for photographs and a must-visit! A word of advice though,it gets really cold at the summit of Kawah Putih, so do bring along your jacket and gloves.

Diving in the Wakatobi, Southeast Sulawesi

The Wakatobi is a remote archipelago situated in the center of the Coral Triangle in Southeast Sulawesi, Indonesia. It is home to Indonesia's second largest Marine National Park, covering 12,500 square kilometers of protected and pristine coral reefs, white sandy beaches and remote traditional villages. As such the Wakatobi is a great destination for scuba diving enthusiasts from all over the World. It is becoming increasingly popular with recreational divers, underwater photographers, marine biologists, and backpackers.
Until recently the Wakatobi has been a difficult to reach due to its remoteness, but that is now changing with the introduction of an airport on Wanci Island. There are now daily Express Air flights (except Mondays) to this airport. Wakatobi visitors can take early morning flights from Jakarta or Surabaya and transit in Makassar. From Makassar you can take a small 32 seater plane to Wanci, via Bau-Bau. Divers should be aware that the baggage allowance on these flights is only 10 kilograms, so pack lightly and consider hiring your dive equipment from your dive operator in the Wakatobi. You can pay for excess baggage, but it is often delayed if the flight is already at full capacity.

Upon arrival in Wanci you will need to embark on the next leg of your journey by boat. Most divers do not spend long on Wanci Island as the top Wakatobi diving spots can be found around Hoga Island and Tomia Island. From the airport jump in a taxi and head for 'Pelabuhan Mola'. From here you can take one of the daily public speed boats to Hoga or Tomia. It is advised to get there as quickly as possible. Flights usually get into Wanci at about 10.30am, so head down to 'Pelabuhan Mola' as soon as you get off the plane to ensure you do not miss your boat. If you do though, you can easily charter a small Bajo boat to Hoga.
Hoga boats depart anytime between 9am and 12 noon so it is often possible to catch one of these. Tomia boats generally leave between 9 and 10am, so if you are planning on visiting Tomia it is often necessary to overnight in Wanci first. If you are traveling with a group of 4 or more divers you can pre-arrange a chartered pick up with your dive operator in Tomia. It is difficult to charter boats from Wanci to Tomia without making an arrangement in advance, as it is quite a long journey and needs a large boat.

For the intrepid travelers with plenty of time there are other ways to get to the Wakatobi. For example you can take a PELNI boat from Makassar to Bau-Bau, or you can fly from Makassar to Bau-Bau with Lion Air or Express Air. From Bau-Bau there is a boat which leaves for Wanci at 9pm every night. It arrives in Wanci at about 6am, so you will be in plenty of time to catch one of the public boats to Hoga or Tomia.
In summary there are many ways to reach the Wakatobi, and the gateway is through Wanci. By far the easiest way is to fly, but the overnight boat from Bau-Bau is also a good alternative, especially if you're thinking of spending a couple of days diving in Bau-Bau beforehand. Once you arrive in Wanci you can travel by public speed boat to reach the top diving destinations of Hoga Island and Tomia Island.

The Exotic View of Toba Lake

Merely a three hours drive from Medan, Toba is the largest lake in Southeast Asia and covers a simply enormous area of 1707 square kilometres. Sitting in the middle of this massive expanse of water sits Pulau Samosir (Samosir Island) which is almost as large as Singapore! The lake was formed by an absolutely gargantuan volcanic eruption some 70,000 years ago and sits in what is the largest caldera on earth. In fact, you'd probably have to head into outer space to actually get a good view of this enormous, dormant, fire breather, such is its size.

Samosir Island and the Toba area in gneeral are the spiritual and cultural homes of Indonesia' mainly Christian Batak population, one of the country's most vibrant and friendly ethnic groups. Toba used to be a very popular tourist destination in times past, although the number of arrivals has dwindled in more recent years. This means, however, that there are no crowds at the lake, prices are cheap and that friendly locals are grateful for your custom. Formerly on the beaten tourist track, Toba and Samosir are now well off it and thus worth a visit if you're looking for a relaxing break.

The friendly, music loving Bataks and the volcanically warm, clear waters of the lake itself, which is set amid a backdrop of breathtaking mountain scenery, should prove to be food for the soul. Ferries run every hour over to the hotels and guesthouses that crowd sections of the Samosir coast at Tuk Tuk. The lakeside town of Parapat is the ferry terminal and the place to head for upon leaving Medan.
When you reach Samosir itself, why not rent a bicycle or a motorcycle and take a tour of the island? The scenery is superb, there's hardly any traffic and there are many pretty places in which to stop off and take a quick dip in the lake's soothing waters.

At Panururan, on the island's western side, you'll find some bubbling hot springs to enjoy whilst at Simanindo, there's a Batak Museum that puts on regular traditional dance performances. Alternatively, why not head out of the main Tuk Tuk area up to the mountain waterfall behind? It's alovely stroll and there's a refreshing swim waiting for you at the end.

Longer Holidays at Berastagi, North Sumatra

Berastagi is situated in the upland of North Sumatra Province. Wedged between Mount Sibayak (2,049 m) and Mount Sinabung (2,451 m), it has cool climate, beautiful scenery, and several tourist attractions. With a well-developed infrastructure, the city is perfect for weekend getaways or longer holidays.

Berastagi has always been a favorite weekend spot for Medan’s citizen since the 1.5 hours trip from Medan (Capital of North Sumatra Province) is relatively shot. The city, however, can also be a worthwhile destination for Jakartans. It only takes a total of 3.5 hours to reach: 2 hours of Medan Berastagi drive.

There are vast forest along the road from Medan and occasionally, you can see buildings with unique Karo (a tribe from Batak ethnic) ornaments, a sign that you have entered their domain.

Women wearing the distinctive Batak headdress can also be seen from time to time.
Mejuah-juah, welcome to the land of Karo! On the road between Medan and Berastagi, lies Sibolangit Botanical Garden, which houses several kinds of local vegetation. Next, it goes winding and sloping upward, going through Penatapen. If you want, you can stop here briefly to enjoy the cool air or a clear view to the plains below.

Near Berastagi, there is an intersection that goes to Semangat Gunung, a starting point for people who wants to climb Mount Sibayak. After this intersection, you will see hotels lining up along the road, right up to the hilltop. You can also see forested hill on the right side of that winding road, before finally entering the main street.

Berastagi is small city with downtown area comprising only of a main street with stores and restaurants on its left and right. For accommodation, it is better to pick hotels on the hilly areas, such as Gundaling Hill where it is quieter and offers better view.
The panorama from Gundaling Hills is especially beautiful in this afternoon. You can see the whole city, its surrounding orchards, and the crater of Mount Sibayak, a volcano that has been dormant for centuries. To the west is Mount Sinabung (another dormant volcano), while the Karo plains lie on the south.
Martabak Telor and Bandrek.
Evening is the best time to savor various North Sumatra dishes in Pasar Kaget, a market that opens nightly along Berastagi main street. Among the interesting dishes are martabak and roti canai, both of which bore heavy Indian influence. Indian are not the dominant ethnic group in the province, but they have definitely left their mark in North Sumatra culinary scene. Among several stalls selling such food is Aboy’s restaurants , named after its owner. It offers martabak telor , roti canai, and Indian-style fried rice.
For drinks, you can enjoy a glass of milk tea or try Berastagi’s favorite beverage: bandrek. It is similar to bandrek common in java, a mix of milk and ginger that warms the body, perfect remedy for the cold weather typical of a place standing 1,400 meters above sea level. Across Berastagi, bandrek is an everyday beverage and the pride of locals.

It may be a bit puzzling why a popular beverage in Java, especially West Java, ends up wiyh the same popularity in Berastagi. Local tales have it that bandrek was introduced some decades ago by a Javanese who opened the first warung (similar to café but with a simpler setup) serving bandrek. Back the, the drink is virtually unknown in Berastagi, but because bandrek suits cold climate, its popularity took off at once. Presently, almost anyone visiting the city will feel obliged to try the beverage. In fact, bandrek has become synonymous with Berastagi.
Fruits Market
Morning is the best time to buy fruits or enjoy the atmosphere of Berastagi’s fruit market at the main street . you can find all sorts of fruits and vegetables, from the ubiquitous orange and tomato, to Berastagi’s special beet, red cauliflower, and passion fruit. You can even buy flowers at this market.
A lot of these fruits were first planted under the direction of Dutch colonial government to supply their need in Medan. Since Karo Plains are Surrounded by volcanoes, the land is very fertile and able to produce the best fruits and vegetables. In the past, most of them are exported to Singapore and Malaysia. Now, it is the tourists that come here to enjoy the harvests.
Another activity you can do is visiting the Lingga traditional village, 16 kilometers south-west of Berastagi. You can observe traditional Karo villagers go about their lives and see their unique tribal houses that are almost extinct, or their traditional garment that are almost extinct, or their traditional garment that many still worn, especially during certain occasions.
You can also continue to the Sipisopiso Waterfall, about 1.5 hours from Lingga, and onwards to Toba Lake, through Simarjarunjung, Prapat, and Samosir Island.
On the way to airport in Medan, you might want to visit the famous Maimoon palace and mosque, or go to Majapahit Road for a box of bika ambon, a delicious local cake with unique spongy texture, sold by various vendors there.
A major point to remember is that you have to book your accommodation in advance for weekends or long weekend, since you will be competing with tourists from Medan, and even Singapore and Malaysia for lodgings.
"Tourist Destination for Nearly a Century"
The de development of Berastagi into tourist destination is closely related with colonial planning. When the area around Medan was converted to plantation (one of the most successful plantation in Dutch colonies), their need for fruits and vegetables were supplied from the fertile lands of Karo. This connection increased in 1908 when the Dutch constructed a road directly linking Medan and Karo high plain.
The Dutch recognized Berastagi’s potential as vacation spot. So they built bungalows, villas, resorts. Clinics, schools, and even a nine-hole golf course. In fact, many of them fell in love with Berastagi that they opted to spend their retirement here.
Berastagi’s fame as a tourist destination began to spread in the 1920s. almost a century later, the city is still attracting local and foreign tourists. Berastagi has become even more popular than Kabanjahe, the capital of Karo.
